Greetings,
As some of you know we had a rather nasty mouthed (even by my standards) intruder pop into our vent channel last night and spew obscenities. While I'm all about spewed obscenities there is a time and place for it. Our vent channel during a raid is neither.
Consequently we had to password the Vent channels. Please PM an officer or Jecii in game from your guilded character for the info. Jecii is graciously taking care of this. Thanks Jecii.
Though this was likely some random dumba$$ with nothing better to do - I'd hate to think it was someone formerly involved with us or our members in some fashion. But just in case - please lets take a precaution and not give out this password to anyone unless they are either a full member or invited to raid or group with an officer online and with that officer's permission.
Use party chat when grouping with non Kin if voice is necessary. I don't think that this was the case here and I know 90% of our grouping experiences have been good, but I just want to curtail future disruptions. I haven't had a chance to go through with it but we'll likely be taking the vent server over from Zhongo (who has graciously kept it running for us) very soon.

Hmmm..think we might have gotten a bit ahead of ourselves here.
I will shortly be reading up on the available documentation and then (hopefully) working with Zhongo in getting everyone who uses Vent to add a password to their settings on their client. I believe it shoudl be decided (officers?) on what to use for password..either individual ones or one that people will be given as a master password. Once we have everyone set up, (Zhongo and) I can work on securing the server a bit more if feasible and if necessary locking down the guest profile so as to prevent any more distasteful folks interrupting our chat and possibly disturbing the youngsters who might be in earshot of our speakers/headphones.
I'm also going to make it possible to add group channels (it is fairly straight forward and once everyone has a non-guest account, this can be done without too much trouble. As far as I know, extra "rooms" doesn't cost anything, and we can always delete them after an outing/raid, etc. (Of course this is all assuming we aren't violating any Terms of Service or rules, etc.)
Feel free to send me your Vent ID info by PM here and I will make sure it is entered as a proper profile for you. This will probably take some time as it will be when I am not doing my 60+ hrs/ week RL work stuff.

Greetings With some help from Floggin (who has a vent server of his own and allowed me to work with him in figuring out the easier pieces of the Ventrilo client), we got a profile set up to use on the Vent server the kin uses (believe it belongs to Zhongo). Last night I started the process of getting folks individual accounts on the server and setting them up in the profile. So far we've had only one small issue. I got a bit to zealous in locking down the guest account and it caused some trouble for Miali to log in. I think I got that resolved as I ran a couple small tests with new usernames against it and I got the results I was looking for. Folks that still haven't worked with me in setting up their accounts will still be able to get onto the server in the normal way with the password as posted on the kin MOTD in game. What I'd need from everyone is the user name they use for Vent and a password to set up with each individual account. Once I have that I can built the user ID on the profile and you'd only have to place the password you chose in the server info part of your profile on the Vent client application. I think I have most of the current users already in and I expect we'll get stragglers connecting back in after a time and we can quickly get them "upgraded" to non-guest IDs. Once we have everyone (or nearly everyone) in the kin upgraded, I'll add a bit more security to the guest account. Thanks, JECII

Jecii, thanks so much for taking care of all of that, I know it's not one of those quick and easy processes that we all love, so I really appreciate you taking these extra steps for us all. After that last foul-mouthed jacktard intruded on us during the Raid, it quickly became apparent that something was going to have to be done. Thanks again.

Greetings again One note on this. With version 2 we still had the default ability of having our name 'spoken' when we logged in/out, switched channels. With version 3 apparently they changed one of these settings so it is no longer the default. In an effort to somewhat bypass this, I'd recommend everyone copy their username into the phonetic box on the user profile (or if you prefer to put something else in there that will make your username sound better, feel free). You can use the play button immediately to the right of the phonetic box to hear what the system will play for that name and if you need to tweak it, you can. For instance, I used Jesse in my phonetic as it sounds better than what the system would otherwise use (It would try and say the username as a real word..that of course could cause strange sounds as many of the usernames we use don't resemble anything one would find in any English dictionary)
