Has anyone played this game yet? My wife enjoys simulation games like Roller Coaster Tycoon and Zoo Tycoon. She read about Spore and it peaked her interest, so I'm thinking of picking up a copy for her. Saddly, I tried to get her into MMOs but she doesn't like the level of complexity with all the buttons to push and the crowded/busy UIs.

I played it pretty much all of yesterday and I think it's undeniably living up to the hype. I just didn't want to stop playing it (until I was surrounded by hostile, powerful races during the space age. It's definitely a different approach to the "sim" game, where you normally start out with a tribe and build your way up to a civilization.
In the early stages, it's more of a first-personish game, where you adventure around as a single creature. Then you eventually get the ability to become a tribe, where it turns into something akin to a a simple resource-management RTS game where you have to work with (or against) other tribes. Then you get to build a city and you have the same thing, only with vehicles and buildings to worry about. Then you get into space and it becomes more of a space exploration/conquest game.
I think the real key here is that the playstyle keeps changing so you're not assaulted by unending hours of the same thing, over and over. It keeps itself fresh during a "session".

It looks pretty cool. I know several of my coworkers are fairly obsessed with the idea of it (since Spore was designed for Mac at the same time).
I don't know if I'd buy it though. It looks very much like another "Where'd my time go?" game, like the Sims or Roller Coaster Tycoon. I'm afraid I'll sit down and suddenly 8 hours will have passed all while staring at a random creature not doing much of anything.

Actually, Pepper, I wouldn't classify it in the same group as The Sims. It's more like Civilization.
The way I see it is... In The Sims, your only real goal is to not lose. To not have a nervous breakdown or die of starvation or lack of sleep. I was never able to get my stupid little Sims to be happy or prosperous. They were always just trying to keep from bawling their eyes out or starving to death. When it's all said and done, all you've really accomplished is to maybe get a couple more things to stuff in your house and just POSSIBLY you might maybe be able to procreate and create an extended family of Sims, all of which are just trying to keep from killing themselves. I've always seen The Sims as... more or less lacking in any specific goals. There's no "win" situation - just lots of "lose" situations.
With Spore... you're trying to grow, evolve, become better at what you are (not just increasing your earning potential, but actually make changes that significantly impacts how you interact with the world) and eventually take over everything. There's a definite goal (conquest/ownership) and a few paths you can take to get there. Designing your creature (beyond the specific traits you need to affect the skills you want) and eventually vehicles and buildings is really the only place where the whole "design the heck out of whatever" comes in and that's only as big or small a part of the game as you want it to be.
Otherwise, sure. It's a time-waster game of the Nth degree. But then again, isn't that what all games are? A way to consume time without gaining anything in the real world but some vague sense of accomplishment?

Spore Reivew on Slashdot. This looks like a pretty fair rundown/review of Spore.

I plan on picking it up on the way home tonight. Bad part is, then you probably won't see me in-game tonight.
