bah, I could make a timeline and put anything in it and give no references for why. Not that wikipedia is much better, but they just confuse it even more. I always thought the "hai" meant "greater" or something. Maybe that was wrong. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uruk-haiThey seem to say there are different kinds of orcs but Saruman did at least make his own new breed of them.

Well no I think they're both right. Sauron bread Uruks, and Saruman changed them further. One thing is many people believe Uruk and Uruk-hai are the same. Both are names for larger, stronger orcs. They mention Mordor Uruks taking Osgiliath way back in the past, which would maybe be before Saruman started experimenting.
The discussions section of the wikipedia page is better, people talking and giving sources, more than the article which doesn't have a lot of sources.
