Four Hundred Years Ago:
The morning was still in the High Moor forest. The air fresh from the nights cold past. The dew slowly dripping from the leaves that once provided refuge. As the sun begins to rise from the horizon and banish the last remnants of darkness from last eve a tall Elven hunter becomes silhouetted against the fresh morning trees. He stands with his bow to his side Eyes looking for any movement. Ears listening for tiny sounds. In the distance something cries out.
The hunters head snaps to attention and whips around to the east. The cry can be heard again. It was not the cry of a wounded beast or even a man no it was the cry of an Elven child. With great haste the hunter grabbed up his bow and ran toward the sound. Trees and brush whisked past him like whispers on the wind. His every step quick, silent and precise. As he grew closer he could her the familiar snarl of Moor Stalkers. "Foul beasts" he thought quickly to himself. He spotted a tree line close by that would provide cover for a surprise attack.
The hunter brought his bow to the ready position and counted the stalkers silently "One, two, three" they were circling a small object wrapped in a indigo colored silks. "That must be the child" he thought to himself. The Elven hunter then knocked three arrows took aim and released *swoosh, swoosh, swoosh* the three arrows cracked the air upon release. *Thud* the first arrow hit its target in the throat and dropped the stalker without hesitation. *Thud* The beast let out piercing cry as the second arrow hit it in the shoulder with a crippling effect. *Thud* The third arrow hit its target square in the front of the chest throwing the beast into the brush.
The hunter cautiously walked out from behind the tree line and walked toward the child watching ever so closely the foes he just made short work of. The child cried in terror As he approached, he could see this child was alone. "Where are your kin child?" He pondered in his mind. After thinking on the subject for a few minutes more he took the child up and whistled loudly. As he picked the child up it stopped crying. "Peculiar" he thought.
The sound of a horse approaching broke the song of the trees as it strode up to the hunter. The hunter with the child in one hand mounted the horse and began his journey home. As they trotted along he spoke to the child "What terrors have brought you here? What happened to you?" These were questions he knew would never be answered. As he studied the child more closely he realized that it was a female Elf. A smile quickly rushed across his face "Precious child, I am Tarthalion of Rivendell I shall care for you now Just until I find your kin" He spoke softly.
Just as the afternoon was coming upon them he arrived at a simple home in Rivendell as he strode up he called out to his wife "Saeldis! Come here love we have much to discuss. Saeldis came out to greet Tarthalion with a smile but instead let out a gasp. "Wh-wha-Where did you find her?" she asked with a big smile as she grabbed the child up from Tarthalion. He replied with a sorrowful voice "She was abandoned I can only assume her family was not spared by the trolls that ravage the land not far from here" "What will we do with her?" Saeldis replied. "We must care for her, until her kin come back for her" he replied. "Well we'll need to call her something" Saeldis smiled. "Yes I suppose you are right" He replied. Saeldis smiled and let out a sigh "We shall call her Melrial" "Perfect, perfect indeed" He replied as he brushed the long light hair from the childs brow.
Present Day:
Melrial woke in the familiar bed at the Pony in Bree. A moan sneaking from her lips. The bright sun peeking ever so mischievously into the room through a small window disturbing Melrials unadjusted eyes. "What a nightmare" she sighs. "One hundred years since you left me here" she spoke softly. Melrial, thinking deeply as she walks slowly to the window in her room and peers out into the mornings innocence and ponders a troubling thought "Mother. Father. What would have become of me if you would not have grown too tired?" "Would I not have come to despise all evils? Melrial lets out a big sigh and speaks softly to herself "Answers I'll never have."
Melrial shakes her head and lets out a deep breathe while walking over to where she slumbered the night prior. "There is much to be done. I cannot dwell on the past. If I fail we have not gone in vain we sacrificed everything for the free peoples and we shall till the end of time" She thought While grabbing up her bow and cloak. "It is time...Who will stand with us?" She ponders.
