It’s been seven days since Lindi first came across the tracks, north of Bree. Seven days of mud, bog, cold nights, barren hills and thick forest. She knew from the size of the tracks, scat and other signs, the beast would be huge, but knowing and seeing are two different things. The buck was at least 500 pounds, more than twice the size of any Whitetail she had ever seen. His antlers counted 20 points. She was in awe of the beast. She knew now that taking him now was out of the question. She decided to try for something better. Her goal shifted from killing the Forest Lord to getting as close as she could, to make eye contact, so the two souls of the wild would know each other. It took all day to get to where she was, 15 yards from him, she judged this was as close as she was going to get. Humbled before the might and power of the Buck, she readied herself for the encounter.
A high pitched shout exploded form the forest 40 yards ahead and to the left of her , just as she was about to rise. The startled buck jerked his massive head to its full height and bolts at a right angle from the noise, away from Lindi.
“NO!!” Anger and frustration rage through Lindi as she drew her bow.
A compact mass of steel, shield and spear bursts from the underbrush, the obvious source of the disturbance. Swearing under her breath Lindi drew a bead, leading her target. She meant to put a broad head in the eye of the intruder for spoiling her hunt and endangering the biggest Whitetail in all of Middle-earth. To her surprise, the howling ball of metal didn’t chase after the buck, but continued straight through where the animal had stood and beyond. Five figures charged from behind the ruin of a stone wall Hidden as they were, Lindi never knew they were there.
“Goblins!” she hissed.
How could she have missed such foul creatures? She cursed herself for spending so much time away from the wilds. The day spent in Bree had dulled her instincts.
Before she could shift her aim, the figure she determined to be a hobbit smashed into the middle of the vile mass of Goblins. Fearing for the Hobbit’s life she prepares to join the melee but stopped from doing so. To her amazement the small warrior accounts well for himself. With a blur of well aimed jabs and wild swings with his spear and timely thrusts and blocks with his shield he finds every chink in the dark armor of the goblins. The five foul creatures were soon reduced to a mass of broken, bashed, and bloody flesh. She had to admit to she was impressed. Just as the last of the little hobbits enemies fall, Lindi’s eye widen with alarm and she lets three arrows fly before the first one reaches its target. The armored Hobbit turns in time to see a massive spider, five times his size, slump to the ground, three arrows in a tight grouping in the middle of its head.
Lindi rose and slowly approached the Hobbit. The Halfling turned quickly, spear and shield at the ready. His eyes were wild and shaken. It was plain to Lindi the little one had no idea the spider was so close.
“Hear now!” he yells his voice full of adrenalin, “I…I …I was savin’ that one for last! You robbed me of me Trophy! “.
“I’m so sorry Master Hobbit” Lindi replied, She hoped she was far enough away he wouldn't see her slight grin. “I had not realized you had plans for such a monster. I am Lindi, of Bree-Land, may I know the name of such a mighty warrior who can single handedly defeat five armed and armored goblins?"
The hobbit slammed the butt of his spear into the ground and stomped one leg onto the chest of a fallen goblin. The force of his action knocked his helmet off kilter, unnoticed.
“PERCY! Defender of the Shire!” His voice echoed throughout the growing twilight.
To this day, Lindi counts keeping a straight face at that moment as one of her crowning achievements.
