Were you aware that a while ago, I purchased the PillagersOfPipeweed.com domain name with the dream of turning it into a portal for us pillagers?
Well... as is common, life had other plans for me and I never had the opportunity to act upon those dreams.
But recently a brave band of Pillagers have stepped forward and have offered to begin work on this monumental effort.
So I introduce the beginnings of the Pillagers Web Team.
Sharliana, Jecii and Freesia.
But. I want EVERYONE with any remote interest to be involved. If you have any ideas. Thoughts. Requests. Suggestions. Time to devote to the development/maintenance/etc. Please post here and let them be known.
We want to keep physical access to updating the site to a small group, but if you create something and want it placed out there, let us know and we'll get it added to the site. Freedom of the press!

I'm not a designer or artist in any way. However I would be happy to donate web hosting space or DNS management/help if needed.
It sounds like you were going to build a website portal for the Pillagers. If you need any help getting the .com to point at the forum or anything else like that, let me know...

I've got the domain and hosting space out on godaddy.com for about 7 months just pointed to an old picture of us at a kin-meeting at the log.
Sharliana made a music downloaded thingie for the music group and I offered up the domain and hosting to him and he's running with it.

I'd be best to help with a problem like, we have this link on the homepage, but it won't go to the forum, what is that URL it needs to point to??
Jecii probably can take care of that also, but let me know 8)

I'm exploring a few options, but I think this is the starting point I'm planning to shoot for *...
1. Public-facing single page "about us". 2. Integrated forums - where we can have a "single sign-on" system** 3. Roster features - each user can "own" multiple characters. Lots of data for people to fill out for each. 4. Crafting Notes - An area where we can keep track of recipe info, current craft-hall stores, etc. 5. Music System - rebuilt and integrated in with improved functionality. 6. At A Glance Scheduler - Each user can define their "usual office hours" so we can see at a glance when is a good time to schedule some event.
* Many of these features would be limited in functionality or disabled entirely for people who are not logged in - things like the Scheduler - the public doesn't need that info. Or the Crafting Notes. And as it already is, some songs in the music system would be "publicly available" while others aren't.
** This would mean we'd have to migrate away from the Proboards system. I'm currently looking at YAF (Yet Another Forum) as a possible replacement. It seems reasonably feature-rich (rather equivalent to phpBB, for those who know it).

Other ideas...
+ A "newsletter" system. Something for the RPers to have some fun with. + A "slideshow" gallery. For event slideshows, like from our fishing outing? Or our first concert? Maybe costume-contest stuff? Or for a home show? + A "journal" system. Another RPer item - for people to write and publish character diaries. + An "Event Calendar" with support for "available seats" and "sign up" kind of functionality. + A "Kin Officers" page, which will display a list of the current officer characters (with forum names) so outsiders know who to contact.

Great ideas!
The only thing that scares me is losing the "history" of the boards. post counts, old users, etc. Something to consider by the kin at large... we'll see what the new boards would look like and then put it up for consideration by the kin and see what pans out.

Well, post counts can be fudged into the new database. Perhaps there's a way to "export" the Proboards data so we can munge some of it into a format that can be imported into YAF. Also, YAF does support setting up a "topic" that's just a link to somewhere else... So we could have a "ProBoards Archive" topic that would just link straight to this board. Wouldn't be AS convenient, but the most important stuff could be copied over to the new boards with a bit of effort.
So, that's something for everyone to think about...
Solution A: The Single Sign-On + all features would require only one user/pass pair + forum features could be intricately linked to other website features + forum security settings can be used to power other security on the website - Old content is off-site (on ProBoards) - We'll have to re-create all our logins - We'll have to copy over the important data, probably by hand (copy/paste)
Solution B: Stick With ProBoards + We already have it up and running + We all have user IDs and are used to it - We'll all have a second user/pass pair to remember - We'll have two "public faces"
That's just my list. I'm sure there's other stuff to consider.

Going to throw my vote behind the Solution A plan - it's just more unified. I agree we don't want to lose the information in these forums, but I don't think it's a huge deal to copy over the "really important" stuff and link to the older, less important stuff.
These forums are awfully clunky, hard to manage and backup and deal with, as well. It'd be nice to have a slicker forum software.

Either plan works for me, I'll have it all saved as my homepage and whatnot. Hey, Freesia, any chance we could port the tables from LotROdecor over? I still bounce over there on occasion.

I wondered about that, was going to talk to Sharliana tonight about it. It's an SQL database so it should be compatible, I'd just have to remember my login info, tee hee.
It needs a good sort/filter script to really be useful. I may just hand over the login stuff and see what can be done with my mess.
I need to update that stuff, too. There's been several new things since I last messed with it.

Update time! Yeah, I'll post once in a while to let people know what's been achieved.
Forum Login Integration... Check! Sort of. I've got it so it authenticates against the forum, and even writes a compatible cookie so that you can go from one part to the other without having to re-login. What's not working is... the cookie is timing out even if you keep being active on the system. I need to figure THAT out, yet.
Character records, Display of: Generic data (name, class, etc), Professions, Instruments, Reputations and Biography, mostly done. Got to "pretty things up" a bit, but those are retrieving and displaying. I still need to figure out how to display the epic quests, though I've got an idea for that now too.
Character records, EDITING of: This is the next thing to work on, and it's probably going to be the hardest part of everything since I need to figure out HOW I want to handle editing and saving (a decision that's got to be made for the website as a whole) before I can start implementing it.
But hey... Progress IS being made.
