Rollo and Daisy peered at the elf that lay upon the ground. The young hobbits were intrigued. Having never
ventured beyond the bounds of the Shire, they had never seen an elf before.
"Izzy dead then?" Rollo asked.
"No, you tart, lookit 'im breathin'" replied Daisy, pointing to the rise and fall of the elf's chest.
"Get me a stick," said Rollo.
"Get cher own stick!" Daisy replied.
Rollo walked off, grumbling to himslef. He picked up a twig a few feet away and came back.
The hobbits held their breath as Rollo jabbed at the elf with the twig.
In an instant, the elf snapped to his feet, siezing Rollo by the hand. Daisy let loose a hair-raising
shriek.
"Puh-Puh-Please, sir elf, dinna hurt me!" wailed Rollo as he began to cry.
The elf looked at Rollo, and then at Daisy. He seemed confused. He let go of Rollo's hand, and the two
hobbits disappeared down the lane in a flash. The elf just stood there.
"Where am I?" he thought to himself. He thought hard for a moment."Who am I?" he thought. Befuddled, the elf sat, and thought; and thought some more. Nothing came to him.
A few moments later, Rollo and Daisy were running up the lane, the Bounder Bodo Bunce behind them.
"There'ee is mister Bodo! See? See?" shouted Rollo, pointing to the elf.
The elf leapt to his feet.
"Hail, Bounder! Well met" said the elf. "I fear I may have frightened the little ones."
"That you did, sir elf! That you did! Tell me, what is your purpose here in the Shire? It's not often we get elves passing through" said Bodo.
"Honestly, sir Bounder, I cannot say" said the elf.
"We'll not tolerate secret business within the Shire bounds! Good works are done in the sunshine, elf -- now, state your business, please, or I shall have to take you in." proclaimed the Bounder.
"Bounder, sir, I cannot say. My memory escapes me - even my own name is unknown to me."
"Our mum sews our names into our skivvies!" said the two hobbit children in unison. "Check your undies!"
The elf blushed slightly as he craned his neck to examine the band of his underpants. Sure enough, embroidered in silver was the following: THESE BELONG TO: Celardor of Mirkwood.
"Celardor?" said the elf.
"Well, that's part of the mystery solved!" said the Bounder. The children cheered and clapped their hands.
"Come now, Celardor of Mirkwood, let's get down to the Bird and Baby - no one ever solved anything on an empty stomach! Let's go!"
And so the elf, and his three hobbit companions headed down the lane.
