This is a serious post. I post it here because I consider you all friends. I want you to know what is going on in my life, I want to share. I have started with a serious tone because, again, this is a serious post. The good news is that it is a happy occasion, not a sad occasion. But it is still a serious subject.
Next Saturday, February 7th, is the occasion of my daughter's Bat Mitzvah. I understand that some of you may not be aware what that means. In the Jewish religion when you turn 13 you are old enough to read from the Torah. The Torah is the scrolls containing the Hebrew Bible. If you are Christian or Catholic you will know these stories and call them "The Old Testament". They are the stories of Adam and Eve, Moses, Noah, etc. So on Saturday, January 7th she will be on the bimah, help lead the service and read from the Torah. She will chant the, "Song of the Sea," a very famous story of Moses leading the Israelites out of Egypt and encouraging them to enter the Red Sea, that God would keep them safe and God parted the Red Sea letting them safely cross while the Pharaoh's armies were swept into the sea. She will after that read a "Divar Torah", a speech she has prepared as to what the Torah portion means to her and how it applies to her life.
Afterwards we will go to a nearby catering hall and have a very large party. There will be approximately 100 adults and 50 children. Family and friends will come in from different parts of the country to join us. There will be a thingytail hour, a sit down dinner, an open bar and music and dancing throughout. We will reflect on those that couldn't be with us, either over distance, sickness or death.
This is all to say that this is a significant event in my life. One that will only be rivaled by my daughter's wedding and the birth of her children and the same again for my son. My daughter, my wife and I have been working hard to make this the best event possible. I have prepared a special slideshow and I have it posted on YouTube, but I have made it private. If you are interested in viewing it, send me an email or PM and I will add your YouTube account so that you can view it. I am keeping it private until it is shown on the day of the Bat Mitzvah. Then I will have it posted on my Facebook account for those that are interested in viewing it.
Thank you all for being one of my families. It means a lot to me.
